The Tupolev Tu-22M, also known as the "Backfire," is a supersonic strategic bomber designed and manufactured by the Soviet Union. It was developed during the Cold War era and has been in service with the Russian Air Force and Naval Aviation since the 1970s.
The Tu-22M was primarily designed as a long-range bomber capable of carrying nuclear or conventional payloads. It features variable-sweep wings, allowing it to adjust its wing configuration for optimal performance at different speeds. This capability enables the aircraft to operate effectively at both low-level and high-altitude missions.
In addition to its strategic bombing role, the Tu-22M has been adapted for maritime strike missions, equipped with anti-ship missiles to target naval vessels. Its speed and range make it a versatile platform for various military operations.
It's worth noting that my knowledge is based on information available up until September 2021. There may have been updates or developments regarding the Tu-22M Backfire since then.
